VAT reconciliation: your returns against your books
A year by quarter in the boxes of the VAT return (sales by rate, purchases by kind), with the totals from your books and what you filed beside them, so any difference shows.
- When you add an expense, choose VAT on this purchase: a local tax invoice, an import with VAT paid at customs, from abroad with no VAT (reverse charge, like Instagram ads), or no VAT.
- Open Accounting, then VAT reconciliation, and pick the year.
- Each quarter shows sales and purchases in the boxes of the return, and the VAT on each.
- Under Against what you filed, tap Enter what you filed and type the totals from the tax authority's confirmation (Fill from the books, then change what differs). Matches the books, or the difference, shows for each quarter.
- Spreadsheet downloads both tables for your accountant.
Reverse charge
For services or goods bought from abroad with no VAT on the invoice, you add the VAT yourself as VAT on sales and claim the same back as VAT on purchases. Tajer does both in your books and on the return, so it nets to nothing to pay.
Zero-rated and exempt products
Outside Saudi Arabia, each product has a VAT choice under its price: standard rate, zero rated (for example basic foods in Bahrain) or exempt. Orders, the till and the honesty box then charge VAT only on the standard-rated part, and the reconciliation shows zero-rated and exempt sales in their own columns.
VAT that cannot be claimed
Without the supplier's VAT number and invoice number (or the customs declaration number for an import), the VAT is part of the cost. Those purchases count at full cost in the last purchases column, as in your books.
